OOTD - Stripes + Plaid and Why I Hate The Term 'Basic Bitch'

I have a confession to make: when I first thought about posting this outfit, which is totally my typical weekend wear by the way, my first thought was 'is this too basic bitch to post?' Within a second of thinking such a horrible thing I immediatly felt awful, and really had a chance to think about how damaging the term really is.

I'm not the most politically correct person, but I do take issue with terms that are meant to put others down.  Although 'basic bitch' is relatively harmless, and some even use it in jest to speak about themselves, the term really doesn't sit well with me. My issue is that dubbing something a 'basic bitch' in the blogging world basically implies that your worth and personality are based on material objects. Sure my closet consists of off-the-rack instead of couture and I tend to gravitate towards trends enjoyed by many - but aren't we all so much more than that? I look at my unique qualities and circumstances: I have a degree, I grew up in Europe - I'm a certified mortician for crying out loud! What really is basic about any of us? We are all so unique and bring so much more to the table than what we wear. So I'll wear my stripped dress, topped with a plaid blanket scarf with pride - and yes, I was headed to Starbucks after these photos were taken!

Dress - SheIn, Jacket - Aritzia, Scarf - Zara
Bag - Marc by Marc Jacobs, Boots - Hunter

I hope that you're not offended by the rant, it's definitely not part of your regular broadcast here at LPN.  I just hope that nobody ever feels bad about the term 'basic bitch' and know that we're all so much more than what we wear! Please let me know your thoughts on the term, I would love to get a discussion going.

  3. Hey Joëlle thank you so much for your 'rant' - I agree completely and I do not like to see bloggers put down just because they don't prescribe to the usual blogger asthetic. Also, who has the money to buy that many Chancel, Hermes and Chloe purses anyway?

  4. I feel out of the loop. I didn't even know that was a term. this is the first time I am hearing of this. Who speaks this way? I like your outfit. I want to see bloggers wear real life clothing, not "The Devil Wears Prada" on repeat. I mean, do you work at VOGUE? lol Who knows how many people have referred to me as that.lol. I am pretty basic too.

    1. It's a term floating around the blogosphere. Mostly it's used in a harmless way, but it's one of those things that just gets under my skin! Haha and I certainly do not work at VOGUE - although I wish that I did! Give me my Anne Hathaway moment LOL! By the way, you are anything but basic! #truth

  5. I'm one of those people who uses the term to describe myself ;) I think it's funny! (even though I'm personally not a big starbucks fan) But it's not cool to try to make someone feel bad about themselves, especially for liking something that everyone else does. I mean, if everyone likes it, it must be pretty cool, right??

I tried to explain the term to my mom and aunt. They couldn't even grasp why it was a thing lol they thought it was so stupid, I got a huge laugh out of it! :)

    1. So true Amy,it's definitely not a great term is being used to harm someone else!

Oh I so feel you on trying to explain it to your mom. You should have seen how long it took me to explain 'Bye Felicia' to my mom LOL!

  6. My sister and I use this term as a joke about each other (especially when the other is in Roots buying those amazing socks!), but what was once funny has turned into a way to put others down, which is not cool! So what is I shop smartly and hoard blanket scarves. Just because I don't carry Chanel, doesn't mean I'm basic in any way. Preach girl!
